In 2012 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. After digesting the information, I launched into a comedy of errors as I communicated the news to loved ones, friends and colleagues. I turned my mistakes into a checklist of how NOT to deliver bad news. (Oh, by the way, I’m healthy and cancer-free!)
IN-THE-MOMENT. Have you ever heard someone use the term, “in-the-moment”? It’s like putting yourself on pause, listening to the world around you, and then reacting to the situation. Good stage and film actors are in-the-moment, reacting to what is given them from the other actor, the environment, or the audience. Communicating is similar. To ensure our message gets across to our audience, from time to time, we need to put ourselves on pause, listen and observe, and react accordingly.
